1910s–30s Exceptional Rare French Indigo Patchwork Workwear Jacket

Dating from around the 1910s–1930s, this exceptionally early French workwear jacket is constructed from lightweight indigo-dyed cotton and carries decades of wear, repair and alteration.

The jacket has been extensively repaired using a mixture of period fabrics, including cotton, métis and linen, creating a beautiful patchwork of different textures and faded indigo tones. Hand stitching, darning and reinforcement can be seen throughout, with each repair adding another layer to the garment’s working history.

The buttons are also a mixture of period types, including corozo and Bakelite buttons, further reflecting the jacket’s long life of use and repair.
